Desperation Leads Single Mom To Create $11 Million Company

Many people make it big after a slow and steady climb to the top. However, the most inspiring and surprising success stories begin with an entrepreneur who is down on their luck. PackIt CEO Melissa Kieling definitely falls into the latter category. She spent over a decade at home with her kids, but then an unexpected divorce left her nearly penniless and unsure of what to do about the problem. After getting her car repossessed, she suddenly found a problem to solve after complaints from her kids revealed that their lunch bags were failing to keep their lunches in good condition.

She used her own shower curtain and some gel ice packs to create the very first prototype of her PackIt bags. It took $200,000 lent by friends to get the very first products crafted and months of gel research to find a worthwhile filler. After all that hard work, Kieling’s efforts paid off. Heading to trade shows with a lunch bag that folds flat to fit in the freezer helped her build a company that is now worth over $12 million. She plans to leverage her success to keep expanding the product range, even though she doesn’t need to worry about repossession anymore.
