Washington  (Profitable.com)  For the second time in less than a year, the American Red Cross is opening shelters and mobilizing volunteers and feeding trucks after tornadoes touched down overnight across several states. Areas of Alabama reported significant widespread damage in some of the same areas that sustained damaged in last April’s deadly tornado outbreak.

In Alabama, homes are damaged or destroyed, power knocked out and roads impassable, blocked with debris. In addition to opening shelters, Red Cross damage assessment teams are fanning out in affected areas to help determine what help people will need in the coming days. Mental health workers are also being mobilized to assist people affected by the storm.

Tornadoes also affected residents of Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois and Mississippi.

“Our first priority is making sure people have a place to go and warm food to eat,” said Charley Shimanski, senior vice president, Red Cross Disaster Services. “While we ramp up our support in Alabama, it’s important to note that Red Cross disaster teams are also busy helping people affected by the heavy snow and flooding in the Pacific Northwest and several large fires.”

How to prepare for a tornado:

Spring is the time of year known for dangerous tornado activity in the United States, but tornadoes can form at any time of the year. The Red Cross has safety tips people can use should a tornado hit their neighborhood.

A tornado watch means tornadoes are possible in the area and be ready to act quickly if a warning is issued or someone suspects a tornado is approaching. A tornado warning means a tornado has been sighted or indicated on radar. People should immediately go underground to a basement, storm cellar or interior room of the house.

Additional things to remember if a tornado warning is issued:

  • Go to an underground shelter or safe room if available. A hallway on the lowest level of a sturdy building is also a safe alternative.
  • Do not seek shelter in a hallway or bathroom of a mobile home. Mobile homes are not safe during tornadoes. If there is access to a sturdy shelter or vehicle, get out of the mobile home immediately and go to the nearest sturdy building or shelter.
  • If caught outdoors, seek shelter in a basement, shelter or sturdy building.
  • If unable to walk to a shelter quickly, immediately get into a vehicle, buckle the seat belt and try to drive to the closest sturdy shelter.
    • If debris is flying while driving, pull over and park. Stay in the car with the seat belt on, head down below the windows and covered with hands and a blanket if possible.
    • If it is possible to get safely to an area noticeably lower than the level of the roadway, get out of the car and lie in that area. A person’s choice should be driven by specific circumstances.

Bridgewater, NJ  (Profitable.com)  Recent national news reports warning of deaths and potential brain infections from the use of neti pots for sinus rinsing may have resulted in some sinus products being incorrectly associated with those risks.

Small changes will be “in” when it comes to weight loss in the New Year

Atlanta, GA  (Profitable.com)  For many people, losing weight will become a high priority this January. Refrigerators will be stripped of holiday leftovers, gym memberships will increase and new weight loss goals will be made.  Fortunately, more than 186 million American adults – or eight out of ten men and women – say they already have been “weight conscious” during the past year, according to a national survey conducted by the Calorie Control Council (CCC).  More than five out of ten (54%) have been trying to reduce their weight, and noted that exercise, cutting back on sugar, using low calorie or reduced sugar products, and restricting the size of meal portions are the most common approaches.

With so many Americans focusing on controlling and losing weight, what trends will emerge in 2012? The CCC is making these predictions when it comes to weight loss and obesity for the coming year:

  1. More focus on farm to table: Trying to buy local products and cook seasonally.
  2. Branching out and trying more international types of foods:  food choices will be influenced more often by other countries and ethnic cuisines.
  3. Trendy exercises: In terms of exercise, the “barre” exercises will become more popular – with an emphasis on strengthening and lengthening muscles, taking a cue from ballet and dancer type exercises.
  4. Calories count: According to the CCC, eighty-two percent of American adults consume low-calorie and sugar-free foods and beverages, to reduce calories and cut back on added sugars in their diets. That number will increase as more low-calorie products and recipes are introduced to the public.
  5. Family meals more in vogue: Due to the economy people are eating out less and there will be more of a focus on nutritious, easy recipes that can get to the table quickly, but still bring the family together on a budget.

“With life busier and more stressful than ever, rather than making a complete overhaul, people will be looking for small steps they can take to be healthier,” said Beth Hubrich, a registered dietitian and executive director of the CCC. “Simple lifestyle changes such as increasing fruit and veggies by one serving per day, cutting out 50-150 calories per day by eating fewer bites of a sandwich, choosing a diet soda or low-cal beverage in place of the regular versions, and exercising 10 minutes here or there, can make a big difference in 2012 – and hopefully for life.”

Overall, according to the CCC, 2012 will be a year of positive change when it comes to calorie control – both calories consumed, and calories burned. “Keep a daily exercise and food diary to really see how many calories you’re putting in and burning back off,” advises Hubrich. “And find a friend or family member to exercise with and compare healthy eating notes. A little friendly competition can help you stay focused on your goals. Also, just cutting 100 calories a day over the course of a year can make a major difference.  That small amount – which most people will never miss – can result in a 5-10 lb. weight loss.”

(Profitable.com)  Each year weight loss authority website Weight Loss Guide releases its choices for the top products in a variety of categories. Hoodoba® Pure Hoodia has surpassed the competition by securing the top position in the highly coveted appetite suppressant category.

“Of all the diet pills I’ve tried, natural and otherwise there is nothing that comes even close. I can surely say Hoodoba® diet pill is my savior. I lost 44 pounds in 10 weeks flat.”
– Stephanie

When Hoodoba® pure Hoodia diet pills were launched into the weight loss market in 2006, they were touted as the most effective appetite suppressant out there. But their vast popularity brought about many counterfeit and diluted “Hoodia” products that caused authentic Hoodia to fall out of the limelight. Even without the surplus of media attention, Hoodoba® was able to thrive and even released the highly successful Hoodoba® Potent Hoodia and Hoodoba® Hunger Block Plus in later years.

Weight Loss Guide’s selection of Hoodoba® Pure Hoodia diet pills is no surprise as they have consistently outranked all other Hoodia products sold both in stores and online. Hoodoba® is so confident about their products in fact, that they have them tested by third party testing lab Alkemist Pharmaceutics to ensure purity and potency.

Hoodoba® Pure is a clear choice for anyone hoping to lose weight in 2012. Made with only 100% pure Hoodia gordonii, Hoodoba® Pure suppresses the appetite so less food is consumed naturally. Hoodia has proven its effectiveness in numerous scientific studies and is so safe that it is classified as a food in South Africa.

Neenah, WI  (Profitable.com)  Adopting healthy habits is a common New Year’s resolution, but following a few simple dietary rules also can help individuals manage incontinence, according Dianna Malkowski, physician assistant, nutritionist and professional adviser for The CareGiver Partnership.

“Incontinence is not a disease; it can be a symptom of daily habits, an underlying medical condition or a physical problem. Urinary incontinence is often treatable, and is always manageable,” says Malkowski. “Along with maintaining a healthy weight, a change in eating and drinking habits can help bring relief.”

1. Monitoring fluid intake. When individuals don’t drink enough and become dehydrated, their urine can become concentrated with bladder-irritating salts. Conversely, drinking too much at a time increases the amount of urine and can irritate or overwork a bladder. Some find it helpful to measure and record daily fluid intake, along with incontinence episodes, to help them see patterns and help health care providers monitor their condition.

2. Increasing dietary fiber. Eating a high-fiber diet can help avoid constipation. Compacted stool can cause nearby bladder nerves to become overactive, increasing urinary frequency. Insoluble fiber helps move stool and is found in vegetables, wheat bran and other whole grains, nuts, beans and berries. Soluble fiber helps soothe the digestive tract and is therefore often recommended for those who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome. Soluble fiber is found in fruits such as apples and oranges, pasta, white bread and potatoes.

3. Avoiding bladder irritants. For those with bladder control problems, it may be helpful to limit alcohol and caffeine. Both are bladder stimulants and diuretics, which can cause a sudden need to urinate. Even teas and carbonated beverages may contribute to bladder problems. Other known irritants are sugar and artificial sweeteners, corn syrup, spicy foods, and acidic foods such as tomatoes and citrus.

New Free iPhone App Directs Users to the Nearest Medical Centers Worldwide

Philadelphia, PA  (Profitable.com)  Azavea, an award-winning geospatial analysis (GIS) software development company, announces the release of the Emergency Medical Center Locator (EMCL) application, available for free download through iTunes. The application was built for the Biomedical Research and Education Foundation (BREF), whose mission is to provide unbiased information resources about biomedical products for patients and their physician.

The first few minutes and hours after a trauma can significantly impact chances of survival, especially as one travels abroad and does not know the local language. The EMCL for iPhone identifies a user’s location and automatically retrieves the name and addresses of the 50 nearest medical centers around them in the United States and abroad. Only the most advanced and state-of-the-art emergency care facilities with improved patient outcomes are included within the application. Six specialty areas can be selected: trauma, stroke, eye, pediatric, cardiac and burn. The application contains close to 2,400 medical centers in 101 countries, including Algeria, Afghanistan, France, Jordan, Morocco, Peru, and Yemen.

“A recent study showed that 75% of emergency rooms do not have round-the-clock resources to open a blocked coronary artery and only 10% of patients are transferred to a medical center in time to receive this life saving treatment. The EMCL app lists only the centers that meet the American College of Cardiology gold standard ‘door to cath lab’ within 90 minutes,” says Dr. Bruce Moskowitz, Founder and Chair of the Board of BREF.

Data-driven applications like the EMCL are significant equalizers when it comes to making information accessible. However, the data they contain can change on an ongoing basis. The application was built in such way that it communicates with a set of database services in order to retrieve the latest information for medical centers worldwide.

The application can be downloaded for free at http://itunes.apple.com/si/app/emergency-medical-center-locator/id477974669

San Francisco, CA  (Profitable.com)  Speech with Milo apps have been enormously poplular since they were created one year ago by the innovative Speech-Language Pathologist, Poorani Doonan. She originally created the apps after using the iPad in therapy and realizing that there was a need for an app to build basic language skills. Getting to 50,000 apps sold was never a goal that Poorani thought she could achieve- she just wanted to create a useful app for kids getting speech therapy.

The Speech with Milo apps have been well-received by critics and reviewers, as they were selected as Best in Education by the Mobile Premier Awards and as #2 in Educational Apps by Babble.com. Poorani, however, attributes Speech with Milo’s success to the parents, teachers and SLP’s that have so enthusiastically supported Milo and friends. “The response never ceases to amaze me,” says Poorani.

Speech with Milo does not appear to be done changing the face of Speech Therapy. They just released an update to the Prepositions which includes ‘Therapy Ideas’ integrated into the tool. “Therapy Ideas was something that I originally started on our Facebook page because I wanted to provide people with useful tips three times a week. It was a natural fit to add it to the app. Now, anybody with our app can scroll through a bunch of good tips to use at home or in school. It will be in all our apps going forward.”

Speech with Milo also continues to stay busy on the development front as they are currently working on an Android version of Verbs. They also plan to release a brand new app on the iPad in December. Poorani declined to comment on the new app, saying only that she wants it to be a surprise.

The innovation is nothing new, but Poorani never thought that the apps would see such success. “I remember one of our first reviews was by AutismEpicenter.com. I was so surprised that we were reviewed in such a great blog. It made me confident that we could build great apps at low prices, and people would find them. Soon we had these amazing sites saying great things about our apps. There are too many to mention, but sites like the iPhoneMom.com were so happy with our apps that we decided to make more.” Recently, sites focused on SLP’s have detailed how they use Speech with Milo. “SpeechLanguageNeighborhood.com does an amazing job explaining how our app and others are used in therapy.” Poorani has also created her own videos for speech therapy apps explaining how she uses Milo in her private practice.

Poorani is very grateful for the support that Speech with Milo has received from parents, teachers, SLP’s and reviewers. “Emails that say ‘We love Milo’ are the greatest motivator we have. We hope to create many more.”

Speech with Milo offers six speech therapy apps. They offer english versions of Verbs, Prepositions, Sequencing, Interactive Storybook. Also offered are Verbs and Prepositions in Spanish.

Port Washington, NY  (Profitable.com)  According to beauty market research conducted by The NPD Group, Inc., a leading market research company, during the first 10 months of 2011, (January to October), total prestige makeup dollar sales in U.S. department stores were $2.8 million, an increase of eight percent in dollars, compared to the same time last year. Units grew five percent with almost 117 million units sold. October was the tenth month of dollar growth and the ninth month of unit growth for the year.

In the first 10 months of the year, all prestige makeup segments saw dollar growth: Total Nail, up 59%; Total Eye and All Other Color, each up 10%; Total Sets, up 9%; Total Lip, up 8%; and Total Face, up 7%.

The big winners in the Face segment were concealer and foundation, while Eyes showed dramatic increases in the eye shadow, eye brow, and mascara categories. In Lip, it was lip color that stole the dollars away from lip gloss and liner (each declining -1% in sales). Lip color outperformed the category’s dollar performance of 8 percent, with an increase of 12 percent. The Nail segment was a winner all around, showing 50+ dollar increases for both nail enamel and top/base coats.

In addition, eye shadow palette sales came on strong, with the trend of dramatic eyes this season. In the first 10 months, eye shadow consisting of five or more palettes grew triple digits in dollar sales, compared to the same time last year. Quad palettes grew double-digits.

“In makeup, while neutral tones and face products led in the past, across countries we see strong gains in color categories of lip and nail color and a new focus on eye shadow and eye definition with growth in eye pencil and brow products,” said Karen Grant, vice president and senior global industry analyst, The NPD Group, Inc. “In makeup, the joy of color is seen with more than half of the top 25 new products (and 7 of the top 10) being from an eye or lip category.”

Silver Spring, MD  (Profitable.com)  The FDA has taken legal action against a dietary supplement maker and owner for substituting ingredients and products without noting the changes on the final product labels. The permanent injunction, filed on behalf of the FDA by the U.S. Department of Justice, would stop the defendants from making and distributing more than 400 products for being in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

This is the first time FDA has taken legal action against a dietary supplement manufacturer of this size for failure to comply with the dietary supplement current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulations. The cGMPs for dietary supplements went into effect in 2007, in a stepped process based on company size. This company’s compliance date came into effect in 2010, and they did not meet the relevant cGMP requirements after that date.

The FDA requested the permanent injunction against ATF Fitness Products Inc. (ATF), Manufacturing ATF Dedicated Excellence, Inc. (MADE), and James G. Vercellotti of Oakmont, Pa., owner and operator of both companies. The cGMP regulations require manufacturers to ensure quality in their dietary supplements by controlling all aspects of their processes and procedures. MADE makes more than 400 dietary supplements, including vitamins and minerals, under the brands “Sci-Fit,” “Nature’s Science” and “For Store Only.” ATF purchases dietary supplements exclusively from MADE and distributes them throughout the United States.

“Dietary supplements have a significant role in the public’s health,” said Dara Corrigan, associate commissioner for regulatory affairs.  “Today’s injunction reinforces our commitment to ensuring that these supplements meet the cGMP requirements the law establishes.”

The government’s complaint, filed Nov. 23, 2011, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, alleges that in addition to “adulterating” and “misbranding” their final products, the manufacturer and its owner failed to report serious adverse events associated with their products.  In one case an individual who consumed one of the products reported experiencing a spike in blood pressure, hospitalization and a subsequent mild heart attack.

Fairfield, OH  (Profitable.com)  Paternity has been pushed into the national spotlight by the recent allegations toward teen pop star Justin Bieber. While tabloids buzz with celebrity paternity stories, thousands of men across the country face the same issue daily and turn to DNA paternity testing to either confirm or refute their relationship to children.  According to DDC (DNA Diagnostics Center), the largest provider of private paternity testing worldwide, questions about paternity testing from men have increased annually and now account for about 40% of all inquiries.

“As one of the leading companies in DNA testing, we’re seeing an increase in calls by men seeking paternity answers, especially for cases where there are disputes or where chain of custody is important,” said Dr. Michael Baird, chief science officer for DDC. “In the case of DDC, we’re an accredited AABB laboratory that maintains a chain of custody reporting structure to ensure results of a test can be presented in court, if needed.”

About 500,000 paternity cases were performed in the United States last year, according to the AABB (aabb.org), the professional society that accredits paternity testing laboratories, in its latest annual report. Establishing paternity is important for the child to have access to legal and social benefits (including social security, veterans and inheritance benefits), provides an accurate medical history and strengthens the bond between father and child. In fact, most state laws require an unmarried couple to complete an Acknowledgment of Paternity (AOP) at the hospital to establish parental rights.

“If there are any questions about who the father is, a DNA test is recommended,” Dr. Baird states.  “About 1 out of every 3 tested alleged fathers is found to not be the biological father of a child.  After an AOP is provided to the Bureau of Vital Statistics, couples have the option of amending the document with a DNA paternity test to confirm parental rights or fathers have the option of securing a DNA test to establish paternity. However, there is a limited time for the validation to take place. Until that time, parental rights are not fully protected.”

In addition to paternity testing services, DDC also provides expert DNA testing for family relationship, adoption, immigration, forensics and ancestry. For more information on DDC visit online at dnacenter.com or call 800-362-2368.

San Francisco, CA  (Profitable.com)  A new study shows that doing brain training exercises is more effective at improving cognitive function than performing knowledge games, like crossword puzzles. This is the preliminary analysis of the results from Iowa Healthy and Active Minds Study (IHAMS) presented yesterday at Gerontological Society of America (GSA) 64th Annual Scientific Meeting in Boston.

The study will be completed in January and its interim results were published this week in BMJ Open. It found that 10 hours of using brain training software improved cognitive function on several standard neuropsychological tests. This is the case whether used in a supervised clinical setting, or self-administered at home. This study included younger (ages 50-64) and older (ages 65-87) participants, and the brain training software worked equally well for both groups.

IHAMS is a follow up to Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) study funded by National Institutes of Health (NIH). In past medical journal articles the ACTIVE study showed brain plasticity software improved visual processing speed, among other factors. IHAMS was designed to overcome limitations in the ACTIVE study by including younger participants.

Early results are that participants who used brain training software significantly improved their cognitive capabilities on several standard neuropsychological tests of cognitive functioning than did participants who trained on crossword puzzles. The improvements in cognitive function were the same whether the brain exercises were done in the monitored clinical setting or in the participant’s home. These positive changes were observed within 8 weeks, and were sustained over 12 months. The improvements for younger participants were just as large as those for the older participants, indicating benefits to beginning brain training early.

“There’s been debate in the scientific community regarding how well brain training works versus other recreational mental activities, such as learning a new language or doing crossword puzzles,” said Dr. Fred Wolinsky, John W. Colloton Chair in Health Management and Policy, University of Iowa. “This study clearly demonstrates that specially constructed exercises for brain fitness – such as the speed-of-processing core of DriveSharp and InSight – work, and are more effective at improving cognitive function than games or recreational activities.”

The Road Tour brain training exercise used in IHAMS is one of five exercises in Posit Science InSight brain fitness software, and part of DriveSharp, a shorter cognitive training program focused around driving safety.

Grosse Pointe, MI  (Profitable.com)  CoolSculpting®, an innovative technology that freezes away unwanted fat, is now available at Grosse Pointe Dermatology, making it one of the first medical practices in the Midwest to offer this breakthrough in non-invasive fat reduction.

“CoolSculpting is an exciting new approach that is non-invasive and has shown significant results in clinical studies for removing fat without the potential risks and downtime of invasive procedures,” said Judith Lipinski, M.D. ” I have found the procedure to be extremely effective, especially on resistant localized areas such as back fat, love handles and the isolated belly fat.  CoolSculpting is comfortable and our patients are highly satisfied.”

“I have complete confidence in this procedure because it is cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA),” said David Balle, MD.  CoolSculpting gently cools unwanted fat cells in the body thereby inducing a natural, controlled elimination of fat cells.  Based on science developed by the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA, this breakthrough is based on a vast body of research that demonstrates that fat cells are more susceptible to cold and are selectively, painlessly and permanently destroyed.  Starting several weeks after the procedure, cooled fat cells begin a process called “apoptosis” and begin to shrink and disappear.  The body proceeds to naturally and gradually eliminate the cooled fat cells, reducing the thickness of the fat layer.

“I’m very impressed with my results – particularly for a non-invasive treatment.  Within several weeks of my first treatment, I noticed the fat around the treatment area lessened considerably and my clothes fit so much better,” says (J.G.).  “I highly recommend CoolSculpting, especially for people who have stubborn body fat that diet and exercise alone do not seem to help.”

Unlike many other methods of fat reduction, CoolSculpting involves no needles, surgery or downtime.  During the procedure, a non-invasive applicator delivers precisely controlled cooling to the treatment area thereby specifically targeting fat.  Treatment lasts one hour per body area treated.  Patients can have additional procedures for more pronounced effects if they desire.  On average, each CoolSculpting procedure results in an undeniable reduction of fat in the treated area, and patients can start to see results as soon as three weeks following treatment, with the most dramatic results occurring over a period of two to four months in most patients.

Hannef, Germany  (Profitable.com)  How often do humans consider their most important source of energy? Without food they can survive for several days, without breathing just a few minutes. But, in fact, humans are very inefficient when it comes to the utilisation of air; about 75% of inhaled oxygen is exhaled again unused. This is one reason why mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is possible. It has been scientifically proven, further, that when aging or ill, humans increasingly lose their ability to utilise oxygen and to turn it into energy.

The biotech start-up Airnergy International GmbH from Germany was the first to develop a medical technology which follows an example set by nature and converts oxygen into a state the human body is better able to metabolise and regenerate. Sunlight and chlorophyll of plants, i.e. photosynthesis, serve as example for this natural remedy. In the so-called Spirovital-Therapy, neither the volume of oxygen is increased nor oxygen ionised or ozone added.

Studies have substantiated the medical-scientific effects of the Spirovitalisation method and it has been certified as a medical product in Europe, Russia, Mexico and the USA. Authorization by the Chinese SFDA is expected to be granted in 2012.

Worldwide about 100,000 of these patented catalysts which energize respiratory oxygen are in use. Airnergy can be used in the medical or commercial sectors, for wellness and fitness, in a company or at home. Depending on the area of usage, the number of catalysts varies: The more catalysts used, the more quickly positive effects are experienced and the stronger these effects are.

This revolutionary energy therapy has its origin about 20 years ago. After the catastrophe in Tschernobyl, a study conducted among 1,000 affected children aroused interest as those treated with Spirovitalisation experienced an enormous improvement in health, in contrast to those treated with conventional methods. Today, worldwide, millions of these treatments are in effect and world class athletes, Hollywood stars and managers, as well as thousands of doctors and patients and families use the Spirovitalisation.

The current head of Airnergy’s scientific council, Prof. Jung, led the department for Sports Medicine, Rehabilitation and Prevention at Johannes-Gutenberg-University in Mainz, Germany for 25 years. His own scientific results and personal experience make him confident that this method has the potential to become a common, public therapy worldwide.

“Our creative team works tirelessly to create patient engagement programs that can help improve health outcomes and change patients’ lives,” stated Sabrina Shattles, Editor in Chief, EVP Editorial and Creative, Healthy Advice Networks. “We have been recognized for eight consecutive years by the NHIA for outstanding health programs.   This year we are especially gratified to be recognized as one of only two companies awarded the 2011 ‘Best of Show’ award and honored that the NHIA chose one of our networks in its entirety, not simply an individual program.  It is a fitting testament to the quality of our work and the passion of our people.”

Deborah Schnell, President of Sales and Strategic Planning at Healthy Advice Networks added, “Earning 10 percent of all awards, competing with such respected organizations as the American Cancer Society, the CDC, and the March of Dimes, is quite a distinction.  Our clients understand and appreciate the value of working with an award-winning content provider.  Our ability to provide contextual relevance to sponsoring brands enables us to deliver extraordinary outcomes and is one of the reasons our programs are considered among the best in the country.”

Silver Spring, MD  (Profitable.com)  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved HEMACORD, the first licensed hematopoietic progenitor cells-cord (HPC-C) cell therapy.

HEMACORD is indicated for use in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation procedures in patients with disorders affecting the hematopoietic (blood forming) system. For example, cord blood transplants have been used to treat patients with certain blood cancers and some inherited metabolic and immune system disorders.

“The use of cord blood hematopoietic progenitor cell therapy offers potentially life-saving treatment options for patients with these types of disorders,” said Karen Midthun, M.D., director, FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research.

HEMACORD contains hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) from human cord blood. Cord blood is one of three sources of HPCs used in transplants; the other two are bone marrow and peripheral blood. Once these HPCs are infused into patients, the cells migrate to the bone marrow where they divide and mature. When the mature cells move into the bloodstream they can partially or fully restore the number and function of many blood cells, including immune function.

In an effort to assist manufacturers in applying for licensure for certain cord blood units, FDA issued the 2009 guidance document entitled “Guidance for Industry: Minimally Manipulated, Unrelated Allogeneic Placental/Umbilical Cord Blood Intended for Hematopoietic Reconstitution for Specified Indications.” FDA instituted a two-year phase-in period for HPC-C manufacturers to submit either a license application or an investigational new drug application. That phase-in period endedOct. 20, 2011, and these manufacturers now must submit such applications.

Approval of HEMACORD was based on reliance on safety and effectiveness data submitted to a public docket and data submitted in the license application demonstrating compliance with other regulatory requirements. This is the first approval of a license application for cord blood.

HEMACORD has a boxed warning regarding the risks of Graft Versus Host Disease (GVHD), engraftment syndrome, graft failure, and infusion reactions, each of which may be fatal. Patients who receive HEMACORD should be monitored carefully. A risk benefit assessment, unit selection and administration of HEMACORD should be done under the direction of a physician experienced in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

HEMACORD is manufactured by the New York Blood Center, Inc., based in New York, NY.

Fargo, ND  (Profitable.com)  Swanson Health Products announces the latest breakthrough in natural bone support: Swanson Ultra BONOLIVE™, a revolutionary olive-based bone health supplement. This innovative product has its roots in Mediterranean tradition, where people have long recognized olives’ and olive oil’s benefits to health, including healthy bone and skeletal development. The phytonutrient oleuropein and other active polyphenols in olives are what make them beneficial to bone health. BONOLIVE can be used on its own to promote bone health, or as a complement to other bone nutrients like calcium and vitamins D and K.

While these components can be found in the fruit of the olives, they are found in greater abundance in the leaves. Research shows that oleuropein works at the cellular level to support bone formation. Unlike other supplements that promote the utilization of minerals, help maintain hormone balance or deliver the building blocks for bones, BONOLIVE works to support bone metabolism and stimulate bone-building cells.

BONOLIVE is produced in the heart of Spain’s olive country, near the town of Jaén in the south-central region of the country. It comes from one special variety of olive trees which yield the highest levels of bioactive polyphenols. An exclusive co-op provides the pristine quality leaves (considered to be pharmaceutical grade) required for BONOLIVE production.

Swanson Health Products is an industry leader in bringing vitamins directly to consumers at the lowest prices possible. Swanson Health Products, headquartered in Fargo, ND, offers the highest quality vitamins, supplements and natural health care products and is Good Manufacturing Practices certified. Swanson Health Products goes a step beyond its competitors by offering powerful guarantees. All products are backed by a 100% Satisfaction, Money-Back Guarantee. Sexy Fit Chef Jennifer Nicole Lee Brings Sexy Back Into the Kitchen & Breaks the Laws of Healthy Cooking with Her Third Book Entitled “The Fun Fit Foodie Cookbook”

Sexy Fit Chef Jennifer Nicole Lee Brings Sexy Back Into the Kitchen & Breaks the Laws of Healthy Cooking with Her Third Book Entitled “The Fun Fit Foodie Cookbook”

New York, NY  (Profitable.com)  Jennifer Nicole Lee is an internationally known wellness guru, motivating millions with her weight loss success story. Now with two bestselling books under her apron, she releases her first cook book “The Fun Fit Foodie”. Jennifer was frustrated by the typical healthy diet cookbooks on the market which promoted boring tasteless “card board” food, which for the most part resembled the same boring dishes, such as boiled chicken and broccoli or oatmeal and eggs. With a passion for all things healthy, JNL set out on a mission to create the most tantalizing gourmet fit foodie cookbook. Her original dishes are full of flavor, exotic spices, and interesting combinations. She is truly breaking the rules of healthy cooking.

The food industry is taking notice. JNL quotes, “We have had major interest from the big name food brands, who are seeking to link their own food brands to the Fun Fit Foodie brand. Being a mom, a wife, and a weight loss success story real every day women can relate to me, and the mega food brands see this. My voice represents the voice the hard working wives, and mothers who want more out of their food and meals for their family and friends.”

JNL’s media production team JNL World Wide Media Productions produced the Fun Fit Foodie TV series, which is also getting many key players in the food and gourmet fields to raise their eyebrows. With 12 complete Fun Fit Foodie Episodes that are all entertaining, enlightening, and also educational without making anyone feel bad about their current food choices, JNL shows the world she is bringing fit and sexy back to the kitchen.

When asked what the future holds for the Fun Fit Foodie brand, Jennifer replies, “We defiantly will branch out into kitchen and cooking appliances. My offices have had several cooking appliance companies approach us and show us current cooking accessories, utensils, and cook ware that make cooking healthier, more fun and easier. If George Forman can do it with the Foreman Grill, the Fun Fit Foodie brand can do it too. We look forward to getting these products into our fellow fun fit foodie’s hands.”

New Delhi and Seattle  (Profitable.com)  Thirteen million babies are born prematurely every year, but new funding announced today will allow for pioneering research into the causes of preterm births and the development of solutions so they can be prevented.

Today, the Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Stillbirth (GAPPS), an initiative of Seattle Children’s, announced a new Grand Challenges in Global Health program that will seek to discover and develop interventions to prevent preterm birth and stillbirth by limiting infection and improving nutrition. The program, called the Preventing Preterm Birth initiative, is supported by a commitment of US$20 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Globally, prematurity is the leading cause of death for newborns, every year taking the lives of one million babies before their first month of life. The Preventing Preterm Birth initiative will mobilize the scientific community to discover the reasons behind prematurity and support research into novel technologies and approaches that provide real-world solutions. The initiative was announced at a joint session of the Annual Grand Challenges Meeting and the Keystone Symposia Conference, in New Delhi, India.

“The objective of the Preventing Preterm Birth initiative is to inspire new scientific research and discover causes of preterm birth that we have never known,” said Craig Rubens, M.D., Ph.D., co-founder and Executive Director of GAPPS. “By uniting the scientific community to combat and prevent prematurity, we have the ability to make an enormous impact on global infant mortality rates.”

Smoking cessation and progesterone therapy are the only interventions proven to reduce preterm birth; two interventions difficult to deploy around the world. The Preventing Preterm Birth initiative aims to uncover at least two new maternal interventions that set prevention measures in motion for the developing and developed world.

“Preterm births claim far too many lives each year, particularly in the world’s poorest countries,” said Gary Darmstadt, Director of Family Health at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. “We urgently need new, groundbreaking ideas that ensure mothers receive the necessary health interventions to help their children have a healthy start to life.”

Under the initiative, GAPPS will solicit ideas from scientists around the world through January 31, 2012. The most promising applications will be selected by a review committee of experts and asked to submit full proposals for further consideration and funding from the pool of resources provided by the Gates Foundation.

“Prematurity and stillbirth are complex global health problems that require an interdisciplinary research approach and an international commitment,” said Alan E. Guttmacher, M.D., Director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. “NICHD is pleased to see this new initiative that is so closely aligned with the Institute’s goals.  Discovery science, whether funded by the Preventing Preterm Birth initiative, NICHD or other funders, is the foundation of long-term strategies to prevent preterm birth.”

Members of the scientific community can apply to be a sub-grantee at http://www.gapps.org/healthybirth where information on the rules for grants can be found. Applicants will be required to also submit their ideas for catalyzing further investments in prematurity research. A video with Dr. Rubens about the Preterm Birth initiative can be viewed here: http://youtu.be/7k_-wnLIgls

Cape Coral, FL  (Profitable.com)  Nature’s Bioceuticals, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mistral Ventures Inc. (MILV.pk) is please to announce the details of the previously mentioned strategic transaction it has been negotiating.  Nature’s was able to enter into a contractual obligation which gives it the rights to purchase an amazing formula for diabetes.  Nature’s has tendered a deposit against formal closing, which is expected in the very near future. At the request of the inventor, to protect his privacy, financial terms are not to be disclosed in press releases.

The global diabetic drug market currently exceeds 25 billion dollars per year. The International Diabetes Federation estimated the global healthcare expenditures to treat and prevent diabetes and its complications are expected to total at least 376 billion dollars for 2010 and account for 11.6% of the total healthcare expenditures in the world.

Robert deZanger, CEO of Nature’s Bioceuticals reiterates his previous statement: “The implications of this natural medicine formula are mind boggling both in terms of the increased quality of life to the people who need it and the potential revenues to the company. There are over 20 different prescription drugs for this condition currently on the market and many of them have multi-billion dollar annual sales. We are anxious to have the formal closing and transfer of the rights as soon as possible so we can file a patent on the formula. We will then immediately start clinical trials to validate the veracity of the initial study. If the new expanded control group responds in a similar manner to the initial result this should be a product that will have far reaching implications and should generate acquisition interest from the major pharmaceutical and natural product companies.”

These medicines are all natural and derived from botanicals and mineral bases. (Profitable.com)  Tooth Soap® Liquid has been a steady seller in the market for years but there has been growing customer demand for a Tooth Soap® Liqui-Gel formulation, says Karen Van Cleef, founder and CEO of Tooth Soap, Inc. “For years I wanted a thicker liquid but we weren’t able to perfect it. Finally, we were able to create a thick gel with the desired consistency that I have been dreaming about.”

Tooth Soap® has four different types available to customers with several flavors, but this gel is unique as it offers greater value to the customer. “Tooth Soap® Liqui-Gel is twice as thick as our regular Tooth Soap® Liquid, and is more concentrated so you need less. We expect Tooth Soap® Liqui-Gel will last twice as long as Tooth Soap® Liquid or Tooth Soap® Gel. If the bottle spills, the thicker Liqui-Gel will not pour out, thus saving product,” states Van Cleef.

Tooth Soap® Liqui-Gel is packed a brown amber glass bottle to protect the delicate essential oils and maintain the integrity of the product. “I chose glass this time because some Tooth Soap® customers prefer glass over plastic, even a plastic that is BPA-free,” says Van Cleef.

“Regardless of a person’s preference, Tooth Soap® Liqui-Gel, along with Tooth Soap® Liquid, Tooth Soap® Whip, Tooth Soap® Gel and Tooth Soap® shreds, continue to provide consumers with an all natural, organic alternative to toothpaste,” says Van Cleef. “Slowly but surely, the understanding that toothpaste is not the optimal way to brush your teeth and gums is growing!”

Pittsburgh, PA  (Profitable.com)  When choosing to use a service, especially one that is vital to health and wellness throughout the years, any savvy consumer does their research.(i) From cost to benefits to customer service, they weigh the pros and cons until finally reaching a decision. At that point, it falls into the hands of professionals behind the scenes who work hard to keep each patient completely satisfied.

In all the tireless research and comparison, it is easy to forget about the vast team that comes together to deliver a quality product. In any operation there are countless individuals playing their part. If this team does not achieve their goals using select tools for success, the final result suffers. These tools are an asset that Automated Security Alert utilizes to build every aspect of their services.

Communication is Key

Even the most basic communication skills can have the power to take a team to the top or bring them crashing down. Internal transmission between co-workers and superiors reduces mistakes, raises accountability and eventually leads to increased morale for everyone. This extends to the outside as well. Without proper communication to vendors, customers and the public, a team cannot expect to serve their general purpose or reach their goals.

Vulnerability

In order to achieve a healthy team, each member needs to figuratively undress in front of each other. This deep revelation builds trust and improves confidence.

Sense of Urgency

One of the most contagious attributes of a thriving workplace is strong determination. With the desire to constantly stay on their toes, a team will relentlessly stay ahead of the competition. With this work ethic running through each and every person, the results are limitless.

Look, Aim, Shoot

Whereas a sense of urgency is a necessity, it is also important not to let it affect the decision making process. Staying up to date with the latest market trends, laws and headlines allows for a faster draw. When the team has current information, it leads to less guessing and detailed research.

Up to Date

A workplace cannot make the mistake of solely keeping up with the latest trends in their own space. Instead, one must dig deeper into the issues affecting the entire world. It is imperative to take the headlines and gain multiple perspectives on the subject to stay on top of all information. This not only improves a team’s knowledge but also productivity and conviction.

The Follow Up and Follow Through

As a team progresses, it is vital to remember the follow up and follow through. With a busy and productive atmosphere, it is easy to get lazy and uninterested in things not included on the immediate task plan. Ignoring these important building blocks can lead to a damaged organization, customer experience and overall culture. Sometimes we need to wake up and intentionally build ourselves to a state of excitement. This improves focus, determination and strength to get the job done.

Attention to Detail

“Didn’t you see that?” Making sure the entire team has a constant focus on the details is everyone’s business. One of the most important communications is constructive criticism to peers when a member is missing the little things. If a team is vulnerable enough to follow through with each other, the details will work themselves out.

These tools are just a few of the methods ASA has implemented to improve their team’s performance every day. The constant goal to improve and excel in these areas builds an overall quality team experience that translates into improved patient outcomes, exceptional customer service and satisfaction.

About Automated Security Alert: ASA has been a local provider of personal emergency response and medication dispensers since 1988. Hoffman Estates, IL  (Profitable.com)  With flu season underway, Kmart is providing seasonal flu vaccinations in its walk-in flu clinics for customers’ convenience, at the value price of $24.99, while supplies last. Vaccinations are now available at any of the more than 900 Kmart Pharmacies nationwide, on a walk-in basis at most locations. Additionally, members of Kmart Pharmacy’s Prescription Savings Club will pay just $20 for the flu shot. Kmart Pharmacy also offers the high-dose flu shot (indicated for those age 65 and over). Many prescription insurance programs cover flu shots, including Medicare Part B and D.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) flu activity usually peaks in January or February, but the flu itself is unpredictable(1). Flu vaccines change yearly to protect against the three viruses that research suggests will be most common during flu season; additionally, the CDC reports that everyone needs an annual vaccination for optimal protection since a person’s immune protection from vaccination declines over time.

“Kmart Pharmacy is aligned with the CDC’s position on preventive care, and we are well positioned to deliver the services that promote the health and wellness of patients in the communities we serve,” said Ghassan Hourani, vice president and general merchandise manager of Kmart Pharmacy. “At Kmart Pharmacy, our pharmacists will take the time to discuss with our patients the importance of being vaccinated as well as practicing good health habits.”

While everyone can benefit from a flu shot, it is especially important for those at higher risk for developing complications from the flu—young children, pregnant women and older adults. In 2012, Kmart Pharmacy will have available at each location nationwide an immunizing pharmacist who is certified by the American Pharmacists Association and authorized by the applicable State Board of Pharmacy to administer vaccines to customers age three and older where permitted by law.

The flu virus is most commonly transferred through sneezing or coughing, but a person can also become infected by coming into contact with a surface that has the flu virus on it and then touching his or her mouth or nose. Kmart pharmacists can provide guidelines for patients on how best to avoid illness during the cold and flu season, in addition to ensuring the most up-to-date flu vaccination.

Kmart pharmacists are available to answer any questions customers may have about the flu vaccine. For more information on vaccinations or Kmart Pharmacy’s Prescription Savings Club, or to find a Kmart Pharmacy near you, call 1-800-822-8345 or visit www.Kmart.com/pharmacy.
