Nearly 1.2 million Michiganians will travel 50 miles or more from home during the Labor Day holiday weekend, about 1 percent less than those who traveled one year ago.  They join the 31.5 million Americans who will travel, a 2.4 percent decrease from last year.  This year’s Labor Day holiday travel period is defined as Thursday, Sept. 1 to Monday, Sept. 5.

Most state travelers – an estimated 98 percent – will go by vehicle to enjoy “summer’s last hurrah,” with campgrounds, resort areas and lakes among the popular destinations.  They join the 87 percent of travelers nationally who will go by vehicle.  Travelers will find higher gas prices this holiday — in Michigan, gas averages $3.71 per gallon (as of Aug. 24), $1.02 more than last year.

“While travel will likely be down slightly because of economic uncertainty, we may see a last-minute increase in travel if recent drops in gas prices continue through Labor Day,” said Steve Wagner, AAA Michigan President.  Based on a survey of traveler intentions, the average distance traveled by Americans this holiday weekend is expected to be 608 miles, slightly less than one year ago (635 miles), while median spending is expected to be $702, largely unchanged from last year’s $697.  Fuel and transportation costs combine for the largest share of holiday spending (27 percent), followed by accommodations (22 percent) and food and beverage costs (21 percent).  Shopping, entertainment and recreation make up the remaining costs.

Air leisure travelers will account for some 1 percent of all travel in Michigan during the holiday weekend.  Nationally, that number increases to eight percent.  Trips by other modes, including rail, bus and watercraft, will be taken by the remaining one percent of Michigan travelers, and five percent of travelers nationwide.

According to AAA’s Leisure Travel Index, weekend daily car rental rates are down seven percent with consumers paying an average of $43.  Hotel rates for AAA Three Diamond lodgings are expected to increase six percent from a year ago, with travelers spending an average of $148 per night compared to $139 last year. Travelers planning to stay at AAA Two Diamond hotels will pay eight percent more at an average cost of $110 per night.

Michigan State Police report during last year’s Labor Day holiday period, 21 people died in 17 fatal crashes on roads across the state.  Eleven of last year’s deaths were alcohol-related.

To help make this year’s Labor Day holiday period a safe one, AAA Michigan will once again partner with the Michigan State Police in supporting Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort).  Bright banners will be posted at various rest areas statewide, with many sites offering complimentary coffee and refreshments.  In addition,  Operation C.A.R.E. volunteers will provide information about some of the major causes of deadly crashes and how to avoid them.

AAA’s projections are based on economic forecasting and research by IHS Global Insight. The Boston-based economic research and consulting firm teamed with AAA in 2009 to jointly analyze travel trends during the major holidays.  AAA has been reporting on holiday travel trends for more than two decades. The complete AAA/IHS Global Insight 2011 Labor Day holiday forecast can be found at AAA.com/news.

AAA Michigan offers travel, insurance and financial services to more than 1.6 million members in Michigan.  It is part of The Auto Club Group (ACG), the largest affiliation of AAA clubs in the Midwest, with approximately 4.1 million members in eight states.  ACG belongs to the national AAA federation, a not-for-profit organization with more than 51 million members in the United States and Canada.

ESCORT Releases PASSPORT 8500 X50 Black Radar Detector, the New Benchmark in Ticket Protection ESCORT Inc, the leading manufacturer of premium automotive accessories and maker of the world’s best radar and laser detectors, today announced the release of their new PASSPORT 8500 X50™ BLACK windshield mount radar and laser detector. The new PASSPORT 8500 X50™ BLACK features significant performance improvements over the current 8500 X50 models and is dressed in a sophisticated black case. This new benchmark represents one more in a long and continuing series of industry leading innovations by ESCORT. The PASSPORT 8500 X50™ BLACK radar/laser detector builds on the strong foundation established by the original 8500 series radar detector released more than a decade ago. Upon its introduction, the original 8500 radar detector was immediately called ‘the world’s best’ by industry and consumer electronics pundits. And the recent 8500 X50 series has been repeatedly named by many 3rd party reviewers as still, the ‘world’s best’. “Our new PASSPORT 8500 X50™ Black delivers an outstanding 40% performance improvement over its predecessor,” said Dave Smidebush, ESCORT Vice-president of Marketing. “The PASSPORT 8500 X50™ Black offers drivers the best performance at the best value in class-leading radar and laser protection.”

The PASSPORT 8500 X50™ BLACK is the next generation of the award winning series that many reviewers, including Forbes.com and Radartest.com, name as “the world’s best detector”. The PASSPORT 8500 X50™ BLACK establishes a new benchmark by utilizing an engineering design that dramatically increases its sensitivity (more than 40% across all bands). This new design gives the PASSPORT 8500 X50™ BLACK significantly longer range detection over the previous X50 series detectors. The earlier models have been repeated test ‘winners’ as reported in multiple independent range and performance testing. This new performance enhancement, in light of the already winning position of the model series, is an extraordinary achievement, again!

Dressed in a black case, the PASSPORT 8500 X50™ BLACK design presents a sophisticated new look in the series. The PASSPORT 8500 X50™ BLACK comes with a fitted travel case and ESCORT’s convenient SmartCord (for added control and ease of use in windshield mounted locations, an industry exclusive).

The new PASSPORT 8500 X50™ BLACK radar and laser detector is available direct from ESCORT for $299.95 (Red display, $339.95 for Blue display – including case and SmartCord). Bad Credit Car Finance: Top 10 Tips

Car Finance Tip 1: Need Versus Want

We’d all like to see a Range Rover on the driveway, but be realistic about the car you can afford to finance. The costs of fuel, insurance and servicing aren’t getting any cheaper, so think about what is affordable now and in the future and not just your dream car! By looking online or in motoring magazines, you can get a rough guide to how much it’s likely to cost you each month and this is a good place to start. moneybarn have a responsible lending policy and we’ll never lend more than you can afford to comfortably pay – make sure you’re sensible about what you can really manage too.

Car Finance Tip 2: Look To The Future

It’s tempting to buy a car with your heart and not your head! Whilst we all get emotionally attached to our cars at some point, try and consider financing a car that will meet your needs for the duration of the finance agreement and not just the next couple of months. Equally important is to remember that if you buy wisely, when your car finance deal ends, you will have a car that has retained more value that you can then use to invest in your next car. Most car magazines feature information on the cars that have the best residual values in the UK which are well worth looking at.

Car Finance Tip 3: Research

Take the time to research your chosen car and the types of bad credit car finance products that are available carefully. Once you’ve got an idea of the car you want, take the time to compare your options. There can be a huge difference in quality and price between dealers across the country and there will always be another car around the corner, so try not to compromise. In other words, don’t buy the first car you see! Use the internet to create a shortlist of cars and also consider researching car reviews and owners’ forums which can be invaluable in helping you find the right car for you. It’s also important to choose the right finance product – the types of agreement available can sometimes be confusing and at moneybarn we spend a great deal of time talking to customers about their options before they buy – talk to us if you want any advice, we’re here to help.

Car Finance Tip 4: Put Together A Monthly Budget

Before you commit to a car finance deal, do your research. Find out the cost of insurance, check the road tax you’ll need to pay and do some investigation into servicing costs and the price of consumable items like tyres and brakes. Most car finance companies require that you keep the car serviced in accordance with the manufacturers schedule, so if you can’t afford to keep the car in good order, it’s unwise to take out a finance agreement.

Car Finance Tip 5: Get Your Finances In Order

Once you know the car you need, how much it’s going to cost and that it’s affordable to run, take the time to get your personal and financial information sorted out. Make sure you’re on the electoral roll, check your credit file to ensure it’s accurate and get your banking, employment and identity documents ready in one place! At moneybarn, when we review your car finance application, our process is more involved than just looking at your credit score – we need to see evidence of your employment, address and identity and also check that the car you want is affordable. It makes the whole process a lot easier and quicker if you have these items to hand!

Car Finance Tip 6: Choose Your Lender Wisely

There aren’t very many actual lenders left in the ‘bad credit car finance’ market as some lenders got caught out by the economic downturn. This makes it even more important that when looking at car finance companies, you make sure you are dealing with a reputable, secure and customer focused organisation. moneybarn have been trading for nearly 20 years (through 2 recessions) and have had a recent multi-million pound investment so we’re here for the long term!

Car Finance Tip 7: Be Accurate and Honest

It’s amazing the amount of applications we get from people who omit information from their paperwork or try and pull the wool over our eyes! When considering bad credit or poor credit car finance applications, it’s even more important that we have an accurate and complete picture of whether you can afford car finance with us. If you put false information or leave out information that you think will harm your chances of being accepted, the chances are we’ll find out and reject your application straight away! We’re sympathetic lenders – we’ll consider applications if you’ve been through an IVA or bankruptcy, but we definitely won’t consider applications that aren’t genuine. It may also harm your chances of getting credit at all in the future if you provide false information, as most lenders share details of fraudulant applications.

Car Finance Tip 8: Negotiate

Once car finance has been approved, use this to your advantage with your local dealer. A prospective customer with funds in place is much more attractive to a salesman than someone without, so work hard to get a good deal. Even if you can’t get a discount on the price of the car, try and get some added value from your new purchase – free servicing, extended warranties or discounted accessories are often available – if you don’t ask, you don’t get!

Car Finance Tip 9: Inspect, Check and Drive

It goes without saying that before you sign on the dotted line of the car finance agreement you should test drive and thoroughly inspect the car you want to buy, but there is much more you can do to make sure your new car is in good shape. moneybarn recommend you invest in a professional inspection (The AA and the RAC both do these) before buying – these are a basic check that the car isn’t likely to cause you major problems in the near future. By checking out car reviews and forums you should also be able to get an idea of common issues or things to look out for on particular models – make sure you ask questions of your dealer if you see or read anything relevant to your car. And always look at the service history, consider when then next major (and minor) service is due, the time until the next MOT and how much tax is remaining on the car.

Car Finance Tip 10: Read The Paperwork

However you choose to finance your car, it’s vital you read through the paperwork before going ahead with the deal. It’s important to understand the specific terms of your car finance agreement, the implications of non payment, your rights under a finance agreement and where to turn to if you need help. At moneybarn, we’re always happy to guide new customers through the paperwork and answer questions.

Pedata RV Center sees more new owners turning torecreational vehicles to maximize their vacation budgets this summer. It’s called summer vacation for a reason; most individuals and/or families expect to take a vacation during the summer months when the kids are all out of school. But the changes in the economic situation of many families in the last few years has made drastic changes to the vacation budgets of many.

More new owners coming to Pedata RV Center for information on buying and information on available stock and pickup are citing their need to maximize their summer vacation budget as the reason for purchasing recreational vehicles.

For those who need to make the most of their vacation dollar, there are easy tips to help them decrease their travel costs:

1. Plan a trip in the nearby area. Aim to complete a trip on one tank of gas. RV owners often refer to this as a one-tank trip.

2. Many RV owners purchase recreational vehicles with setups that will make hitching a small vehicle to the back of the RV a possibility. This allows them to park their RV, set up camp and then drive their smaller, more fuel efficient vehicle around town. This can drastically decrease total gas expenses for the trip, and makes it more comfortable to drop in on local diners.

3. Plan your route carefully. You want to consider fuel efficiency by choosing the shortest route to your destination without ruining the effect of the RV on the road. Many prefer longer, more scenic routes, but accommodate their budgets by spending at least part of the trip focusing on the quickest route rather than the most beautiful.

4. Find the best gas prices in your area. Every smart phone will have apps available to search out and direct you to the lowest gas prices in the area. Use the available tools to maximize all those vacation dollars.

5. Drive like grandparents. Driving slowly and sedately can decrease the amount of gas being used by recreational vehicles and it adds up quickly during a road trip.

Gerard Pedata of Pedata RV Center said, “It’s summer time. A lot of people are traveling to the basic hot spots: Disneyland, famous camping spots along the beach, Six Flags, Universal Studios, etc. And they’re all great, but we recommend that RVers consider what there is to do in their own area. Most are surprised at the entertainment and leisure options that are within hours of where they have lived for years, or even all their lives.”

Pedata RV Center sells used RVs, travel trailers, fifth wheels, campers, and motor homes. Their full inventory is accessible online, and due to their low overhead costs they are able to offer competitive pricing in their industry. Easy access to industry and recreational vehicle information allows consumers to have access to the specific knowledge they need to ensure their purchase results in long-term satisfaction.

According to a recent study, 90 percent of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America youth graduate high school, thanks in large part to influential mentor relationships built at the clubs. Bottom line: Mentoring works. With this in mind, America’s leading oil filter brand FRAM® (www.fram.com), MTV’s Pimp My Ride host Xzibit, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica kicked off the FRAM Ready to Role program, a nationwide initiative aimed at instilling confidence in young men through mentorship and hands-on car maintenance skills.

“Unlike with past generations where people took pride in caring for their vehicles, most youth aren’t taught do-it-yourself car care skills. But we’re aiming to change that,” said Duane Pekar, brand leader for FRAM. “The hope of Ready to Role is to reignite that ‘under the hood’ passion and build confidence in at-risk youth – to give these young men skills they can use on their car and in life.”

During the three-hour kick-off event at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica’s Main Branch, FRAM technicians, local car buffs, and Xzibit taught the fundamentals of car maintenance to more than 50 club members ages 11 to 14 who participate in the Passport to Manhood character and life skills program. In between working on cars, the young men and technician volunteers spent time discussing cars and life over pizza.

“We know that connections with caring adults have a significant impact on the self-esteem of our young people. That’s why we create opportunities for them to be exposed to productive mentoring relationships,” said Aaron Young, chief executive officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica. “The FRAM Ready to Role program teaches our kids new confidence-building skills that they can use later in life. At the same time, mentors show them they can achieve anything they put their minds to.”

FRAM also donated $5,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Monica, and gave each child a personal car-care kit so they can continue to work under the hood of their own family vehicles.

The next Ready to Role event will take place in October with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago.

For more information on how to easily care for your vehicle, visit www.fram.com. To learn more about how to become a Boys & Girls Club member or volunteer, visit www.bgca.org.

The one millionth Kia vehicle to come into the United States through the Port of Tacoma – a 2011 Optima Hybrid, still covered in protective wrap – rolled off a ship at the Port’s Blair Terminal on August 11.

“We congratulate Kia Motors on reaching this milestone at our Port,” said Connie Bacon, commission president, Port ofTacoma.  ”Over the years, the Kia business in Tacoma has meant thousands of longshore hours for our International Longshore Workers Union Local 23 workers who drive the vehicles off the ships, and hundreds of jobs at AWC and throughout our community. We look forward to continuing this long-standing relationship with Kia Motors.”

Since February 1995, Auto Warehousing Company (AWC) and its 200 employees have processed every Kia imported through the Port of Tacoma.

“This tremendous milestone demonstrates the strength of a long-standing partnership between Kia Motors America and the Port of Tacoma,” said Tom Loveless, vice president of sales, Kia Motors America (KMA).  ”Kia’s commitment to the U.S. market is reflected in our growth and long list of critically acclaimed products, including the all-new Optima Hybrid that is now arriving in dealer showrooms.”

KMA’s market share has grown each year since the company entered the U.S. in 1994, and last year the company eclipsed the 350,000 unit sales mark for the first time.  Kia Motors has undergone a dramatic, design-led transformation, which has been delivering dynamically styled vehicles in several important segments at exactly the right time, contributing to the brand’s continued gains in U.S. market share.

The Optima Hybrid is Kia’s first-ever hybrid vehicle in the U.S. market and was introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show inNovember 2010. The 2011 Optima Hybrid uses a full parallel hybrid system and can be driven in zero emission, full-electric drive mode at speeds up to 62 miles an hour, or in a blended gas-electric mode at any speed.

When the Optima Hybrid comes to a stop and the electrical load is low, the engine shuts off to completely idle fuel consumption and emissions. The vehicle uses a lithium polymer battery, developed in South Korea by LG Chem.

About Kia Motors America (KMA)

Kia Motors America is the marketing and distribution arm of Kia Motors Corporation based in Seoul, South Korea. KMA offers a complete line of vehicles through more than 730 dealers throughout the United States and serves as the “Official Automotive Partner of the NBA.”  In 2010, KMA recorded its best-ever U.S. sales and 16th consecutive year of increased U.S. market share. Kia is poised to continue its momentum and will continue to build the brand through design innovation, quality, value, safety features and new technologies.

As of last year, more than 32,000 people died on U.S. roadways. Astounding? I’d say so. What if there was a way to drop that number to less than 10,000? Meaning more than 20-some-thousand lives (that’s friends, family, loved ones) could be saved. Oh, and this is a technology that could help eliminate gridlock – saving you time and money – and reduce the amount of CO2 emissions your vehicle coughs out its tailpipe – greening the environment.

These are pretty enormous benefits, wouldn’t you say? I’m sure you have some questions. Like, what is this technology? Does this technology actually exist? And does it really work?

This technology actually does exist. For the past decade, automakers, suppliers and the government have been working to develop vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) technology, otherwise known as V2X, Connected Vehicle or Talking Car technology. V2X allows your vehicle to communicate with other vehicles and the infrastructure. For example, you’re at a stoplight and it just turned green. You’re about to punch the gas, but before you do, your car tells you the intersection is unsafe – stopping you from hitting the car that’s running the red light. That’s talking car technology.

This week, the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) is holding its first Connected Vehicle Driver Acceptance clinic in a suburb of Detroit. About 100 local drivers will test technologies that will help the USDOT learn more about how drivers respond to vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) systems.

This is a big step forward in moving to deploy connected vehicle technology. And here’s why. Testing this technology is key in gaining driver acceptance – seeing how people react to it, ensuring that it’s safe and not distractive. The USDOT’s pilot program also will test the effectiveness of the dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) devices. DSRC is the technology that will allow your car to “talk.” It’s a WiFi-like technology developed specifically for the automotive industry.

DENSO’s been working on DSRC technology since 2003 and its devices are among the equipment being tested in the USDOT’s Connected Vehicle clinics. You probably haven’t heard so much about DENSO being part of this initiative – as an automotive supplier, we’re more of a behind the scenes player. But, you’ve probably heard some of the automakers talk about V2X and how it can be incorporated into their vehicles to increase safety and help reduce congestion.

Seeing is Believing

Over the last several years, we’ve performed countless experiments to test and validate this technology. Not to mention all the demos we’ve done to show the benefits of these devices. Taking into account those experiences, one thing is certain. Seeing is believing.

You can talk about how this works, but the wow factor comes when you experience the technology for yourself.

I’m curious to hear what ordinary drivers think about the technology. It’s been a long time in the making. We’ve all been talking the talk and I know now it’s time to see if our efforts pay off and we can begin to walk the walk.

Note:  This perspective release was contributed by Roger Berg. Berg is Vice President of Wireless Technologies for DENSO International America (DIAM) located at DIAM’s North America Research Laboratory in Vista, Calif.  He is responsible for V2X technologies strategy and OEM and government relations.

Dodge Durango has been named a “Top Safety Pick” for 2011 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS recognizes vehicles that perform “good” in front, side, rollover and rear crash test evaluations performed at its Vehicle Research Center in Virginia.  This award applies to Durango models built after May 2011.

Additionally, to be considered, vehicles also must have available electronic stability control systems, which, research has shown, significantly reduce crash risks.

The all-new 2011 Dodge Durango offers consumers 45 safety and security features, including standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC), which delivers three security features to improve overall vehicle stability both on- and off-road: electronic roll mitigation (ERM), which reacts and applies brakes during extreme situations, and Hill-start Assist (HSA), which works with standard Trailer-sway Control (TSC) to enhance off-road and towing capabilities.

Other safety and security features available on the 2011 Dodge Durango include Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross Path (RCP) detection, which aid drivers when they’re changing lanes or parking. In addition, Durango features standard seat-mounted and side-curtain air bags in the front row. The curtain air bag extends protection to second- and third-row passengers. Durango also includes standard front-row active head restraints. Additionally, drivers can remotely lower third row headrests to enhance rear visibility when the seats are not occupied.

“The Durango is the eighth vehicle from Chrysler to earn the Institute’s highest safety honor,” said IIHS president Adrian Lund. “The performance of the Durango means buyers are getting the best protection in the most common kinds of crashes, and electronic stability control for avoiding many crashes altogether.”

The new Durango joins seven other vehicles from Chrysler Group LLC that are Top Safety Picks for 2011. Earlier this year, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger were named “Top Safety Pick” by the IIHS. In selecting the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the IIHS noted the addition of torso airbags to bolster side crash protection to the vehicle’s already comprehensive list of safety features. Chrysler 200 sedan, Dodge Avenger and Journey return to the list of IIHS “Top Safety Pick” for the third straight year. Jeep Patriot is also “Top Safety Pick” when equipped with available seat mounted side airbags.

All eight Chrysler Group LLC vehicles feature electronic stability control as standard equipment for 2011.

“With the latest addition of Dodge Durango, coupled with the new Jeep Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger, Chrysler Group has eight Top Safety Picks for 2011. This recognition by the IIHS underscores our commitment to engineering safety and security technology across all vehicle segments,” said Scott Kunselman, Senior Vice President – Engineering, Chrysler Group LLC. “As we continue with our product transformation, we’ll continue to engineer new technology and more capabilities into all our vehicles.”

All eight Chrysler selections employ a two-fold approach to safety including active head restraints for front seat occupants, standard antilock brake systems with four wheel disc brakes, and supplemental side airbags.

About Dodge Durango

With its four-wheel independent suspension and responsive steering and handling, Durango puts the “Sport” in Sport Utility. No other SUV on the road compares with the all-new Dodge Durango’s distinctive bold Dodge design that craftily houses a spacious three-row, seven-passenger functional, flexible and premium interior, covered in soft-touch materials. Durango features more than 30 storage areas, 28 seating configurations and a rear cargo area of nearly 85 cubic feet that fits a 6-foot couch with room for coffee table or a 10-foot ladder with the front passenger seat folded flat.

Durango also delivers the perfect blend of power and fuel efficiency. Its award-winning 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine delivers best-in-class 290 horsepower along with a best-in-class driving range of 500 miles on one tank of fuel – that means Durango owners could drive all the way from Chicago to Nashville; San Diego to San Francisco; or New York City to Boston and back again without needing to stop for fuel. The available HEMI V-8 engine with Fuel Saver multi-displacement technology delivers a best-in-class 360 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque. Both engines deliver best-in-class V-6 and V-8 towing with standard trailer sway control on all models (V-8 up to 7,400 lbs. and V-6 – up to 6,200 lbs.). Durango also features more than 45 safety and security features.

The dog days of summer can be tough on vehicles as high temperatures can destroy batteries and stress the cooling system and tires. As a precaution, these vehicle components should be checked periodically during summer to help avoid breakdowns and car problems, according to the Car Care Council.

Excessive heat and overcharging shorten the life of a battery. Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate, which then damages the internal structure of the battery. A malfunctioning component in the charging system, usually the voltage regulator, allows too high a charging rate, which will eventually destroy a battery.

To get the most life out of a battery, the council recommends having the electrical system checked to make sure it is charging at the correct rate. If your car’s battery is the type that needs to be topped off, check it often, especially in hot weather and add distilled water if necessary. Keep the top of the battery clean. Dirt can become a conductor, which drains battery power. If corrosion accumulates on battery terminals, it becomes an insulator and inhibits the current flow.

The cooling system also works harder during hot temperatures to prevent overheating of the engine. To keep the cooling system working effectively, the coolant and distilled water mixture for a vehicle’s radiator should be 50:50. As a reminder, never open a hot radiator cap when checking the coolant level in the reservoir.

As a rule of thumb, the coolant should be changed annually on most vehicles. This will keep the cooling system fresh and clean inside, which helps prevent corrosion and assures that the coolant has the proper boiling point and protection. A pressure test, thermostat test, a cooling fan test and a visual inspection for leaks and corrosion should also be done annually. Hoses and drive belts should be checked for cracks, bulges or frayed edges.

The radiator should be kept clean by periodically using a garden hose and a soft brush to carefully remove bugs, dirt and debris.

Tires also need special care in warmer weather as high temperatures put added stress on them. To maximize tire life and safety, check the tire condition and inflation pressure monthly, and have the tires rotated every 6,000 miles. Summer heat will cause the pressure within a tire to rise, therefore, it’s important to check the pressure when tires are cold. The owner’s manual includes the recommended air pressure for your vehicle’s tires.

“It takes very little time and money to make sure your car runs properly during summer, and although breakdowns happen, they can definitely be minimized by taking a few extra preventive maintenance steps,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council.

The council reminds motorists that the vehicle’s exterior also can be damaged by sunlight, UV radiation, acid rain, salt, dirt and air pollution. To protect the paint and finish, vehicles should be washed weekly and waxed every six months.

The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a copy of the council’s Car Care Guide or for more information, visit www.carcare.org.

Nissan Americas has announced its support for the U.S. government’s proposal to set new nationwide greenhouse gas and fuel economy standards for passenger cars and light trucks between MY2017 and MY2025.

The Obama Administration has committed to continuing on the path of a harmonized national greenhouse gas and fuel-economy program for passenger cars and light-duty trucks. Nissan endorses this “one national program” approach as essential to future technical innovations across the automotive industry.

The rigorous new greenhouse gas targets call for a 5 percent year-over-year improvement in CO2 reduction for passenger cars and 3.5 percent year-over-year improvement for light trucks from MY2017-MY2021 as an estimated industry average. After MY2021, the proposal calls for a 5 percent annual increase for both passenger cars and light trucks through MY2025. Nissan has committed to working with the administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Transportation and the California Air Resources Board as they solidify the details surrounding the aggressive targets.

“The Obama administration has issued some extremely challenging greenhouse gas reduction and fuel economy improvement targets, but Nissan is a company built on innovation and we’re up to the task,” said Scott Becker, senior vice president, Administration and Finance, Nissan Americas. “Nissan’s recent product introductions – including the all-electric Nissan LEAF, the Infiniti M Hybrid and improvements to internal-combustion technology – demonstrate our multifaceted approach to meeting consumer demand for increased fuel economy across our product lineup and to achieving these rigorous targets. We’re looking forward to helping achieve the Administration’s goals under one national standard, which supports long-term planning and technology development.”

Nissan introduced the LEAF – the world’s first and only 100-percent electric car for the mass market – in December 2010 and since has sold more than 4,000 units in the United States. Nissan recently announced the introduction of new markets, including Washington D.C., to the LEAF’s rollout schedule. The LEAF has achieved a fuel-economy rating of 99 mpg combined city/highway. Starting with the 2013 model year, Nissan will be building the Nissan LEAF and the lithium-ion batteries that power it in the United States, at its manufacturing facilities in Smyrna, Tenn., while the electric motors will be built at Nissan’sDecherd, Tenn., engine plant.

The Infiniti brand recently introduced a hybrid system on the Infiniti M luxury sedan, which allows it to produce V-8 power with 4-cylinder fuel economy. The Infiniti M Hybrid is the only car sold in the U.S. with more than 350 hp and an EPA rating greater than 30 mpg, achieving 32 mpg on the highway cycle. This technology was developed specifically to be compatible with other models across the line-up.

Debuting on the 2012 Versa sedan, Nissan also is launching its “Pure Drive” initiative, which showcases Nissan’s continuing commitment to development of environment-friendly technology through improved fuel economy on internal combustion engine vehicles. The Versa Sedan employs a dual fuel injector system, the next-generation continuously variable transmission, and other advanced technologies. The “Pure Drive” designation and technology will spread to other vehicles in the Nissan lineup as well.

Pedata RV Center releases tips for safe cross country RV trips. During the summer months more people find themselves on the road in areas that are unfamiliar to them. And many find themselves in areas not only unfamiliar, but unlike any other region they’ve ever experienced.

Tips for Safe Cross Country RV Trips:

1. Buckle up. This should be implied, but many feel that they are exempt from the rule when traveling by RV. And while one of the comforts of the RV is to be able to feel at home on the road, buckling up is still a safety issue.

2. Carry a portable weather radio. When traveling through unfamiliar areas, travelers are often amazed by unique landscapes, cultural highlights, and local fare, but they are also often surprised to discover that the weather varies greatly depending upon what region they are visiting. Be aware of what is possible through pre-trip research. Be prepared for potential weather issues (snow, hurricane, flood, etc.) And carry emergency weather notification devices such as weather applications for smart phones or the previously mentioned portable weather radio.

3. Check the air pressure in the RV tires. This is one of the simplest safety measures and one of the most often overlooked. A blow out on the highway at high speeds in an RV is a difficult and very dangerous experience. Don’t ignore the chance to prevent it by simply checking to ensure the tire air pressure is appropriate prior to departure and regularly throughout the trip.

Gerard Pedata of Pedata RV Center said, “We always recommend that new RVers listen to veteran RVers who have been to the area they have chosen to visit. We also recommend that RVers in general listen to the locals; they can be a big help if given the chance.”

Pedata RV Center sells used RVs, travel trailers, fifth wheels, campers and motor homes. Their full inventory is accessible online, and due to their low overhead costs they are able to offer competitive pricing in their industry. Easy access to industry and recreational vehicle information allows consumers to have access to the specific knowledge they need to ensure their purchase results in long-term satisfaction.

DTE Energy announced today that it will install four Plug-in Electric Vehicle charging stations at Detroit Metro Airport – part of a program to deploy 16 such public charging stations throughout Southeastern Michigan.

The airport charging stations will be in the two main parking decks at the airport – two on the eighth floor of the McNamara Terminal parking deck and two on the fourth floor of the Big Blue Deck by the North Terminal. There will be no cost for PEV drivers to use the charging stations.

Besides the four PEV charging stations at the airport, DTE Energy also will install two charging stations in Ferndale, Mount Clemens, Rochester Hills and Auburn Hills, and one in Saline. In addition, two charging stations will be installed at the Village of Rochester Hills retail center and one at the Automation Alley technology center in Auburn Hills.

DTE Energy is working with General Motors through a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) grant to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles in the U.S. by deploying vehicles and installing charging infrastructure.

“This is another step we’re taking to ease the transition to PEV ownership, as well as meet the demand for infrastructure by current PEV owners,” said Trevor Lauer, DTE Energy vice president, Marketing & Renewables. “A key factor in the widespread success of electric vehicles will be the ability of utilities to supply ‘fuel’ on demand at a reasonable cost.”

“The introduction of electric vehicle charging stations in both parking structures at Detroit Metro Airport is the latest among a number of partnerships the Airport Authority has forged toward more sustainable transportation,” said Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) Board Chair Renee Axt. ”As operators of the airport system at the center of the global automotive industry and the region leading the development of alternative fuel technologies, it’s our pleasure to introduce infrastructure that supports the advancements of our hometown industry.”

Added WCAA Interim CEO Genelle Allen: “With the assembly line for the Chevy Volt just 20 miles down the road, we want our customers to know that we’ll soon be ready to accommodate such alternative-powered vehicles when they’re parked at Detroit Metro Airport.”

The GM/DOE public charging station demonstration program is an addition to another DTE Energy program which offers special electric vehicle rates and up to $2,500 for the purchase and installation of a 240-volt residential charging station for faster charging. Nearly 100 DTE Energy customers have participated in the program.

DTE Energy (NYSE: DTE) is a Detroit-based diversified energy company involved in the development and management of energy-related businesses and services nationwide. Its operating units include Detroit Edison, an electric utility serving 2.1 million customers in Southeastern Michigan, MichCon, a natural gas utility serving 1.2 million customers in Michigan and other non-utility, energy businesses focused on gas storage and pipelines, unconventional gas production, power and industrial projects, and energy trading. The Dodge brand earned three awards as the Dodge Challenger, Charger and Durango led their segments in the J.D. Power and Associates 2011 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study(SM).

The Dodge Charger ranked highest in the Large Car segment and was the most improved model in the industry. The Dodge Challenger scored highest in the Midsize Sporty Car class and Dodge Durango took the top spot in the Midsize Crossover/SUV segment.

The Jeep® brand improved by 32 points and Chrysler increased by 27 points compared to the industry’s average improvement of three points.

“We’ve listened to our customers and made significant improvements across the product line, launching 16 all-new or extensively updated vehicles in the past year,” said Doug Betts, Senior Vice President — Quality, Chrysler Group. “We worked very hard to make our vehicles truly competitive with the best vehicles in their respective segments. It’s nice to see this effort being recognized by our customers.”

According to J.D. Power and Associates, vehicles with high APEAL scores generate faster sales, higher profit margins, and less need for cash incentives. High levels of vehicle appeal also influence customer recommendation rates.

In the recently announced J.D. Power and Associates 2011 Initial Quality Study (SM) (IQS), the Dodge Challenger and the Chrysler Town & Country ranked highest in their respective segments for initial quality.

The APEAL Study examines how gratifying a new vehicle is to own and drive, based on owner evaluations of more than 80 vehicle attributes. Unlike IQS, which measures short-term quality, the APEAL Study identifies consumer likes and dislikes about their vehicle during the first 90 days of ownership, particularly regarding vehicle design, content, layout and performance.

“Different customers have different opinions about what makes a quality vehicle,” Betts explained. “At Chrysler Group, we define and measure six different types of quality. We’ve set aggressive internal targets and our progress is starting to show up in third-party surveys as well.”

Electric-Powered Mitsubishi i Earns Impressive EPA RatingWhen it comes to the new Mitsubishi i electric vehicle, the sales professionals at Bill Jacobs Mitsubishi cannot wait to be able to offer it to the public. When it comes to buying a new Mitsubishi in Joliet, Illinois, they are tough to beat on selection of vehicles and customer service, which is even more important to some people. The new EPA rating for the Mitsubishi electric car that is coming is really quite impressive in many ways.

The 100% electric-powered Mitsubishi i has earned an EPA-rated 126 MPGe in city driving and 99 MPGe out on the highway – for a total of 112 MPGe combined. Additionally, the EPA has also awarded the stylish and fun-to-drive electric vehicle (EV) a “real world” driving range of 62 miles, which is quite impressive when it comes to zero emission vehicles of the future.

Advanced safety features that are standard on the new electric car from Mitsubishi.

  • Dual-stage supplemental front air bags
  • Driver and front passenger seat-mounted side impact supplemental air bags
  • Roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags for front and rear-seat outboard passengers
  • Active Stability Control (ASC) with Traction Control Logic (TCL)
  • 4-wheel Anti-Lock Braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD)
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
  • A high voltage cut-off system
  • An Approaching Vehicle Audible System (AVAS)

“We feel that with the combination of capability, affordability, and high level of efficiency offered by the 2012 Mitsubishi i will prove very appealing to consumers considering EV transportation,” said Yoichi Yokozawa, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America.

In November of this year, MMNA will launch the battery-powered EV, the Mitsubishi i, as part of a mission to offer consumers more environmentally responsible modes of transportation. This battery-powered electric vehicle technology addresses the need for vehicles that produce zero tailpipe emissions. It supports a growing agenda for sustainability.

Local residents who want to buy a Mitsubishi in Joliet, Illinois or find out more about the electric vehicle coming from this technologically advanced car company are encouraged to drop by Bill Jacobs Mitsubishi. As the leading Mitsubishi dealer in Joliet, they have the selection and service consumers demand as well as all the high-tech cars.

Novelis, the world’s largest producer of rolled aluminum, today announced it will invest approximately $200 million to expand its rolling operations in Oswego, NY, in response to escalating demand for aluminum sheet in the United States. The expansion will result in a capacity increase of 200 kt, five times the company’s North America capacity for producing aluminum sheet for the automotive industry.

Novelis is the world leader in aluminum automotive sheet, with more than 50 percent of the global market share for aluminum sheet used for making structural components and exterior body panels. Novelis aluminum can be found in 117 different vehicle models produced by leading automakers around the globe.

“We are proud to continue building upon our leadership in providing technically innovative aluminum sheet for the global automotive market,” said Philip Martens, President and CEO of Novelis. “As the world’s number one supplier of auto sheet, we are in a unique position to support the growing demand from automakers for the use of lighter weight materials in new vehicle designs. This world class expansion will provide these customers with highly engineered aluminum sheet designed to significantly improve the fuel economy and reduce emissions of new vehicles currently in development, while also reducing the lifecycle carbon footprint of their overall operations.”

Aluminum is the sustainable choice for vehicles because of its recyclability and low weight. Lighter weight vehicles are a major part of the solution to the challenge that auto makers face in reducing emissions and improving fuel economy. Novelis will construct two new high-performance aluminum processing lines for automotive applications. The Oswego facility is an integrated recycling, hot rolling and cold rolling complex producing aluminum sheet for the beverage can, automotive and building construction industries.

The move reinforces Novelis’ sustainability commitment to reduce its carbon footprint as well as those of its customers. Cars made with more aluminum use less fuel and produce less greenhouse gas emissions. Novelis will also make a strong effort to include recycling initiatives into all new sheet contracts.

Novelis expects to hire approximately 100 new employees at Oswego over the next two years leading to start-up of the new equipment in the summer of 2013.

“Job growth and economic development are key to revitalizing New York’s economy and have been a top priority for my administration,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo. “Our goal is to make New York one of the most business friendly states in the nation. I congratulate Novelis on their expansion and applaud them for creating over 100 new jobs for the people of Oswego.”

In addition to incentives from the State of New York and Empire State Development, the County of Oswego Industrial Development Agency is providing additional support.

The global automotive sector is transforming the vehicle manufacturing process to contain larger percentages of aluminum sheet, causing higher demand for the material. To meet new fuel economy standards, North American auto makers are using more aluminum in cars to make them lighter and more fuel efficient without affecting size. New regulations in development by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are challenging automakers to boost the fuel economy of their vehicles to around 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016 and reduce emissions.

Fact sheets on Novelis, the company’s work in automotive, the Oswego plant, photos and B roll can be found in the novelis.com media center at http://www.novelis.com/en-us/Pages/Press-Kits.aspx.

U.S. News & World Report has named the 2011 Ram 1500 the best full-size pickup. In the magazine’s ranking of top vehicle choices, Ram 1500 scored the highest among the eight full-size pickups available to U.S. buyers.

The rankings are based on an in-depth analysis by U.S. News editors of all published vehicle ratings, reviews and test drives.

“This honor recognizes, in aggregate, the consistent, positive reactions we’ve been getting since we launched the current Ram 1500 model,” said Fred Diaz, President and CEO, Ram Truck Brand and Chrysler de Mexico, Chrysler Group LLC. “In developing the Ram 1500, our team worked hard to understand what truck customers want. Ram Truck is committed to being the truck technology and innovation leader, and that commitment will guide us as we continue to improve what is already the most awarded Ram truck ever.”

Ram drew praise for its interior comfort, class-leading handling and HEMI® V-8 performance.

“The 2011 Ram 1500′s smooth, car-like ride, well-designed and comfortable interior and powerful V-8 engines make it a top pick in its class,” said the U.S. News editors.

“When Ram’s designers updated the Ram 1500 for 2011, they managed to make improvements to an already-impressive truck,” the magazine went on to say. “The result is a full-size pickup truck that many in the auto press say is the best in its class.

“Reviewers love the Ram 1500′s ride, handling, power, and interior, even on less expensive trim levels. The Ram 1500 offers many convenient cargo solutions, such as storage cubbies underneath the rear seats on Crew Cab models. Other models offer the RamBox, lockable storage containers built into the truck bed above the wheel housings.”

The magazine cites other third-party accolades in naming the Ram 1500 the best full-size pickup:

“The Ram 1500′s interior is as good as it gets in the pickup segment.” —   Edmunds

“The available V-8s are impressive performers, the chassis is well suited to heavy work and the Ram’s cabin is a class leader in terms of design, ergonomics and materials.” — Edmunds

“Ram earns high marks for ride comfort, creative storage options, and abundant available power. Impressive cabin trappings are a nice bonus as well. Chevy, Ford, and Toyota loyalists would do well to have a look. You may well be won over by this Best Buy.” — Consumer Guide

“When towing various size trailers on a short loop, the HEMI-powered Ram acted as if nothing was attached to the rear. It just chugged along, getting up to 60 mph with ease, even with a 9,000-pound Air Stream attached on a simple hitch” — Detroit News

“There are lots of nooks and crannies (more than 40) to hold cell phones, gloves, tools, folders and just about anything else. There are even two floor storage bins that include removable containers for easy cleaning.” — Detroit News

“Storage spaces abound: under the rear seats; in the doors, the center console, and the dual glove boxes; and within the new drainable, lockable ‘RamBox’ bins in the bed walls.” — Car and Driver

The 5.7-liter HEMI engine offers an amazing combination of power and fuel economy with 390 horsepower and 20 mpg highway. As America’s Independence Day weekend approaches, a recent AAA survey reveals high gas prices will impact travel plans for 44 percent of intended travelers, leaving 70 percent looking for other ways to save.

According to the motorist group, the national average price for regular gasoline during the holiday weekend is expected to remain approximately one dollar per gallon higher than last year.

For drivers looking for other ways to save on summer travel, choosing the right tires could be the answer. Choosing a tire such as Goodyear’s Assurance Fuel Max can help drivers save gas and spend less money getting to their destination.

“As drivers across the U.S. and Canada begin planning for lengthy summer road trips, many of them are looking for ways to deal with the high price of fuel,” said Gary Medalis, Goodyear brand general manager. “Goodyear’s expertise in Fuel Max Technology can be as important for their summer vacations as packing the sunscreen.”

An innovative tire, Goodyear’s Assurance Fuel Max features a proprietary fuel-saving tread compound that helps reduce energy loss as the tire rolls, so less gas is required to keep the tire rolling.  The 4 percent improvement in highway fuel economy delivered by Fuel Max tires means drivers can save up to 2,600 miles worth of gas over the life of a set of 4 tires.*

The Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max was named one of the “100 Most Innovative Products of the Year” by Popular Science magazine. The tire made the Popular Science “Best of What’s New” 2009 list of products in the Automotive Technology category.

Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max tires also have been selected as original equipment fitments for recognized fuel-efficient vehicles, such as the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco, 2010 Ford Fusion S, and 2010 Toyota Prius.

The tire has earned the Good Housekeeping Seal, after evaluation by the Good Housekeeping Research Institute. Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max tires will carry the familiar Good Housekeeping Seal on product packaging, in brochures and advertisements, and various displays. The Seal is an emblem of Good Housekeeping’s consumer policy, which offers a two-year, money-back limited warranty within two years of purchase. See warranty for full details.

The Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max is available to consumers, and offers all-season traction with a full range of 37 sizes, fitting more than 80 percent of the passenger tire segment. Additionally, Assurance cs Fuel Max is a tire with the same fuel-saving benefits, available in 21 sizes for SUVs and crossover vehicles. **

Goodyear urges motorists to regularly check tread depth and tire inflation. Properly inflated tires will benefit the vehicle’s performance, provide even-wearing tires for longer tread life, and even help improve fuel efficiency.

See www.goodyear.com for more details on the Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max tires.

Goodyear (NYSE: GT) is one of the world’s largest tire companies.  It employs approximately 72,000 people and manufactures its products in more than 55 facilities in 22 countries around the world.  Its two Innovation Centers in Akron, Ohio and Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg strive to develop state-of-the-art products and services that set the technology and performance standard for the industry.  For more information about Goodyear, go to www.goodyear.com/corporate.

Driver-Ratings.com allows users to vent their road rage by posting license plate numbers and comments about good or bad drivers on the road. The goal is to reduce road rage and let drivers save their fury for the keyboard.

Here’s how it works:  Users can go to the website and search for drivers by entering a license plate number and state. They may then read previous ratings about the driver, or can enter their own rating by checking the driver as “good” or “bad” and leave a comment about their experience. Users may also upload photos of bad parking jobs as well as video uploads to further document their story. Safety is the number one priority of the website and urges users not to use the site while driving.

The Department of Transportation states that most of the approximate 6 million car accidents each year are caused by irresponsible driving behavior. While the site does not claim to replace the authority of local police and the DMV, it allows drivers an alternative means to confront bad drivers without a physical altercation resulting in violence.

The website has received over 75,000 license plate ratings since its beta launch two months ago with around 70% of the ratings being positive. Still, there are some pretty hilarious comments about bad drivers:

About a bad driver in California: “If you kid is an honor student, perhaps they can teach you how to drive.”

About a bad driver in Texas: “This person drives their car likes it’s a weapon” about a bad driver in Texas

About a naked driver in Washington: “We drove past him and I was like ‘Is that guy naked??’ and my roommate was like ‘No, he probably has shorts on’. Nope.”

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will increase the national per-mile business driving rate to 55.5 cents-per-mile for the final six months of 2011. The rate increase will be effective July 1, 2011 through December 31, 2011.  At which point, the IRS will review vehicle costs and determine the rate for 2012.

This is an increase of 4.5 cents from the currently established rate of 51 cents-per-mile that was in effect for the first six months of the year. The cents-per-mile standard is the amount the U.S. taxpayer can deduct for vehicle expenses on his or her 2011 tax return for business miles driven.

The decision to increase the national per-mile business driving rate reflects the recent fuel price fluctuations. Runzheimer International will work closely with the IRS to establish the rate for the time period beginning January 1, 2012. Runzheimer International has provided this annual service to the IRS since 1980.

The IRS also announced a new six-month rate for computing deductible medical or moving expenses of 23.5 cents-per-mile, up from 19 cents for the first six months of 2011. The rate for providing services for charitable organizations remains at 14 cents-per-mile.

AAA Announces its Top Vehicle Picks for Road TripsAmerican drivers love to spend their vacations hitting the open road. AAA anticipated nine out of 10 travelers over the recent Memorial Day holiday weekend took a road trip as opposed to traveling by plane, train or other mode of transportation. For those in the market for a new vehicle that they hope to log plenty of miles in while traveling, AAA has released its top vehicle picks for road trips.

“Since the invention of the automobile, Americans have enjoyed taking road trips. From wood-paneled station wagons to oversized conversion vans, most Americans have grown up taking road trips with their family and friends,” said John Nielsen, AAA National Director of Auto Repair, Buying Services and Consumer Information.

“Today’s American road trips come in many different forms: family vacations, mancations, girlfriend getaways, romantic excursions and more. And the ideal vehicle for a road trip can come in as many different forms depending on where you want the road to take you and who will be joining you for the ride,” said Nielsen.

To assist travelers seeking the ideal vehicle for their road trip, AAA Auto Buying experts developed a list of its top picks for road trips taking into consideration a wide variety of factors such as interior comfort, cargo size, passenger room and comfort, fuel economy, safety, vehicle performance and handling as well as other factors.

AAA’s top vehicle picks for road trips highlight vehicles in six categories to offer options for a variety of consumers at every price point. The 2011 top vehicle picks for road trips include:

Small Cars
Chevrolet Cruze Eco – From the Cavalier to the Cobalt to the Cruze, each generation of compact Chevrolet vehicles has been an improvement from the previous, and the Cruze is no exception. AAA Auto Buying experts tested the “Eco” version with a six-speed manual transmission, which is the non-hybrid gasoline fuel economy leader in its size category. It also received a five-star overall rating in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA’s) more stringent new crash test program. AAA found the Cruze Eco to be a good value with impressive fuel economy, making it a smart pick for road trip lovers on a budget. For those looking to take more than two on their road trip, the Cruze lacks rear cup holders and a center armrest, and the rear seat may be cramped for tall passengers. The TrueCar national average selling price of the Chevrolet Cruze “Eco” is $18,837, 1.8 percent (or $338) less than the MSRP.

Ford Focus – A definite improvement over the previous version, the new 2012 Ford Focus drives very nicely with above average ride and handling. Fuel economy and engine performance also are very good and highway cruising is impressively quiet for the small car field, making it a top pick for road trips. As with other cars in the category, it’s ideal for two travelers as the backseat can be a bit cramped. The TrueCar national average selling price of the 2012 Ford Focus is $16,896, 2.3 percent (or $399) less than the MSRP.

Kia Soul – For those looking to express themselves a bit more while on the road, AAA Auto Buying experts like the funky looks of the Kia Soul and its practicality, as well. Reviewers found little to fault with the Soul, which offers a 10-year/100,000 mile warranty, 30-mpg fuel economy and is a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Soul also received a five-star crash test rating from NHTSA. The TrueCar national average selling price of the Kia Soul is $16,759, 2.5 percent (or $431) less than the MSRP.

Medium Cars
Ford Fusion – The Ford Fusion is a well-rounded vehicle. Its engine performance, ride and handling are all very good, and the hybrid version can produce exceptional fuel economy. As an added bonus, all-wheel drive is an option, which should make the car more appealing for those who enjoy winter-time road trips in certain parts of the country. The downside found by AAA Auto Buying experts is the four-cylinder engine could be more refined. The TrueCar national average selling price of the Ford Fusion is $18,821, currently selling for 8.8 percent (or $1,824) less than the MSRP.

Toyota Prius – The Toyota Prius is a road trip top pick because it’s roomy, comfortable and economical. The hatchback design makes for exceptional flexibility, as well. The hybrid drivetrain sips fuel, and with careful driving, it can push fuel economy well past 50 mpg. However, for those who love engaging and sporty vehicles for their road trips, the Prius may not be the right choice. It’s a secure and predictable ride, but not engaging to drive. The TrueCar national average selling price for the Toyota Prius is $24,876, which is 2.5 percent (or $596) above the MSRP. Increase demand due to higher gas prices and lowered supply of the Prius make it the only vehicle on AAA’s list currently to be selling for more than its MSRP, according to TrueCar pricing information.

Hyundai Sonata – AAA Auto Buying experts found the Hyundai Sonata to be an excellent performer from any perspective. The ride is comfortable and controlled, the handling is highly predictable and the four-cylinder engine delivers both good performance and good fuel economy. For those planning a road trip with taller passengers in the back seat, the swooping roof cuts into the rear seat head room as well as rear visibility. The TrueCar national average selling price for the Hyundai Sonata is $20,572, 2.7 percent (or $573) less than the MSRP.

Large Cars
Toyota Camry/Avalon – These cars share a platform and a V-6 engine. The Camry also offers four-cylinder power, which should be sufficient for most drivers. The cabins are roomy with the Avalon offering exceptional rear seat comfort, good for those taking multiple passengers on a road trip. Fuel economy with the V-6 when on the open road is surprisingly good. While both have solid handling, neither car is engaging to drive for travelers seeking a little extra from their driving experience. The TrueCar national average selling price for the Toyota Camry is $20,668, 6.1 percent (or $1,337) less than the MSRP.

Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger – Much improved for 2011, the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger (built on the same platform) offer a surprising amount of room, a comfortable and well-controlled ride and good handling. Interior treatments are noticeably upgraded, as well. The new 3.6-liter V-6 engine provides adequate power and reasonable fuel economy. However, AAA Auto Buying experts report rear visibility is still an issue though forward visibility for overhead traffic lights has been improved from previous model years. The TrueCar national average selling price for the Dodge Charger is $24,803, 5.4 percent (or $1,417) less than the MSRP.

Infiniti G37 – AAA Auto Buying Experts agree the Infinity G37 is one of the most engaging driving experiences with sharp handling and a powerful 328-horsepower V-6. It also comes loaded with standard features and excellent safety ratings. For road trippers, the interior is a bit snug and the ride might be too firm for some depending on their personal preference and road surface conditions. The TrueCar national average selling price of the Infiniti G37 is $33,894, which is 7.6 percent (or $2,801) less than the MSRP.

Minivans
Honda Odyssey The Honda Odyssey is big, but the driver does not have to put up with an unwieldy vehicle as its handling is surprisingly good. As for space, this minivan can carry a large family with ease. Optional split-screen entertainment also can keep rear seat passengers entertained during long trips. The TrueCar national average selling price for the Honda Odyssey is $30,777, three percent (or $953) less than MSRP.

Toyota Sienna – Big, comfortable and inviting, the Toyota Sienna has many features to put it on the top picks for road trips list. The ride is comfortable and quiet while the V-6 engine performs impressively. AAA Auto Buying experts reported that the Sienna’s handling is not the best in the class and the interior is not as polished as some road trip fans may prefer. The TrueCar national average selling price for the Toyota Sienna is $24,209, 6.4 percent (or $1,661) less than MSRP.

Chrysler Town & Country Much improved with a mid-cycle freshening, the Chrysler Town & Country comes with a standard array of useful safety features including a backup camera and cross traffic and blind spot alerts. The Stow ‘n’ Go seats are unparalleled for convenience and the ride and handling are quite good in the new model. The Town & Country can be a great pick for those traveling with children, however the second row seats still are not very adult friendly. The TrueCar national average selling price for the Town & Country is $28,696, 7.7 percent (or $2,399) less than the MSRP.

SUVs
Dodge Durango – The new platform for the Dodge Durango, which it shares with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, is very good. Its ride and handling are well above average, and the new 3.6-liter V-6 is more than capable of delivering power when needed. Rear seat room is up to the challenge of handling six-foot passengers. The main drawback to the Durango is its below-class-average fuel economy. The TrueCar national average selling price for the Dodge Durango is $27,347, nine percent (or $2,698) less than MSRP.

Subaru Forester Easy to drive, comfortable and budget friendly (at least in its basic, though still well-equipped trim levels) the Forester is ideal for longer trips. Its ride and handling are good, and the base engine performance is more than sufficient for family use. The only downside is its fuel economy is average for the vehicle category. The TrueCar national average selling price for the Subaru Forester is $21,513, 5.3 percent (or $1,207) less than MSRP.

Toyota RAV4 – Good ride, good handling and good room make the Toyota RAV4 an excellent extended drive vehicle. The V-6 is much more powerful than the four-cylinder motor, yet fuel economy seems not to suffer much with the upgrade. One downside noted by AAA Auto Buying experts is the location of the rear door hinge at the side, rather than the top, which can complicate access to the cargo area. The TrueCar national average selling price for the Toyota RAV4 is $22,150, 4.9 percent (or $1,135) less than MSRP.

“Fun” Cars
Porsche Boxster/Cayman There are few cars that offer a better blend of handling and engine performance. The Porsche Boxster and Cayman are not the fastest, but they are quick enough to be thoroughly entertaining on a road trip—especially those that might include some winding roads. As with most of the “fun” picks, there is only room for two, and the Porsches’ split trunks limit packing options. The TrueCar national average selling price for the Porsche Boxster is $47,022, 4.1 percent (or $2,028) less than MSRP.

Chevrolet Corvette – Great handling and power are the highlights of the Chevrolet Corvette that can make it a fun car for a road trip. As with other sports cars, travelers will need to pack light and leave the kids at home for road trips in this American classic. The TrueCar national average selling price for the Chevrolet Corvette is $45,156, 9.7 percent (or $4,839) less than the MSRP.

Volkswagen GTI – The Volkswagen GTI may be the best overall compromise in the “fun-to-drive” category. It is roomy enough to be practical, while the ride is surprisingly supple considering its handling. The interior is nicely designed and put together. While a good compromise of room and fun, the back seat is still a tight fit for adults if taking a longer road trip. The TrueCar national average selling price for the Volkswagen GTI is $26,187, 5.3 percent (or $1,478) less than MSRP.

With high pump prices, Consumer Reports says that the most effective way to cut your gasoline use is to buy a more fuel-efficient car. CR named the best cars for fuel economy of those recently tested by the magazine in its own real-world fuel-economy tests. Also listed are the ones that got the lowest mpg in each class.

“Hybrid and diesel vehicles provide better fuel economy than conventional cars, but they usually cost more to buy, and as gas prices rise, the pay-back time gets shorter,” said David Champion, Senior Director of Consumer Reports Auto Test Center in East Haddam, Connecticut. “All-wheel drive usually reduces gas mileage by about 2 mpg while a manual transmission can improve fuel economy by 1 to 2 mpg.”

The article also features a list of the best used cars for fuel economy.

Below are recommended models in six categories that provide the best fuel economy. To be recommended, they met Consumer Reports’ stringent requirements for test performance, reliability, and safety. So, not only do they provide excellent fuel economy for their class, but they’re solid overall choices. The full list of vehicles is available in the magazine’s July issue on sale June 7th. All the reports are also available to subscribers of www.ConsumerReports.org. Updated daily, it’s the go-to Website for the latest auto reviews, product news, blogs on breaking news and car buying information.

Some of the Best ways to save gas

Before you leave:

  • Check your tires. Underinflated tires require more energy to roll along, which eats up more fuel.  Make sure your tires’ air pressure is set to the automaker’s recommended level (see the owner’s manual, not the maximum pressure printed on the tires’ side.
  • Get the right rental. If you plan on renting a car, try to reserve one with good gas mileage. For about the same rate, for example, you could get a 26-mpg Nissan Altima instead of a 20-mpg Chevrolet Impala. Or you could get a 32-mpg Toyota Corolla instead of a 24-mpg Chevy Cobalt.

On the road:

  • Watch your speed. The faster you drive on the highway, the worse your gas mileage will be. CR’s tested Toyota Camry dropped 5 mpg when testers increased cruising speed from 55 mpg to 65. Driving at 75 mph cut it by an additional 5 mpg.
  • Drive smoothly.  Avoid hard acceleration and braking when possible. In the Camry, frequent bursts of acceleration and braking reduced fuel economy by 2 to 3 mpg.
  • Don’t be a drag. Don’t add to your car’s aerodynamic drag by carrying things on top of the roof if you don’t have to. When CR’s testers installed a large car-top carrier on the Camry, gas mileage dropped by a notable 6 mpg when driving at 65 mph.
  • Skip the gas-saving gadgets.  After testing several devices that claimed to improve fuel efficiency, CR’s testers have yet to find one that provides a significant difference in gas mileage or acceleration.
